THE OXFORD DECLARATION

(The appearance of the Oxford Declaration and the immediate response to it is one indication of the fact that a revived liturgical movement is now gaining strength and confidence in England as well as the United States. The Declaration was published in the name of the Liturgy Forum of the Centre for Faith and Culture, constituted under the chairmanship of Mgr Peter J. Elliott, a Vatican official and author of Ceremonies of the Roman Rite, at the conclusion of the Centre's summer conference). 1. Reflecting on the history of liturgical renewal and reform since the Second Vatican Council, the Liturgy Forum agreed that there have been many positive results. Among these might be mentioned the introduction of the vernacular, the opening up of the treasury of the Sacred Scriptures, increased participation in the liturgy and the enrichment of the process of Christian initiation. However, the Forum concluded that the preconciliar liturgical movement as well as the manifest intentions of Sacrosanctum Concilium have in large part been frustrated by powerful contrary forces, which could be described as bureaucratic, philistine and secularist. 2. The effect has been to deprive the Catholic people of much of their liturgical heritage. Certainly, many ancient traditions of sacred music, art and architecture have been all but destroyed, Sacrosanctum Concilium gave pride of place to Gregorian chant, yet in many places this "sung theology" of the Roman liturgy has disappeared without trace. Our liturgical heritage is not a superficial embellishment of worship but should properly be regarded as intrinsic to it, as it is also to the process of transmitting the Catholic faith in education and evangelization. Liturgy cannot be separated from culture; it is the living font of a Christian civilization and hence has profound ecumenical significance. 3. The impoverishment of our liturgy after the Council is a fact not yet sufficiently admitted or understood, to which the necessary response must be a revival of the liturgical movement and the initiation of a new cycle of reflection and reform. The liturgical movement which we represent is concerned with the enrichment, correction and resacralization of Catholic liturgical practice. It is concerned with a renewal of liturgical eschatology, cosmology and aesthetics, and with a recovery of the sense of the sacred--mindful that the law of worship is the law of belief. This renewal will be aided by a closer and deeper acquaintance with the liturgical, theological and iconographic traditions of the Christian East. 4. The revived liturgical movement calls for the promotion of the Liturgy of the Hours, celebrated in song as an action of the Church in cathedrals, parishes, monasteries and families, and of Eucharistic Adoration, already spreading in many parishes. In this way, the Divine Word and the Presence of Christ's reality in the Mass may resonate throughout the day, making human culture into a dwelling place for God. At the heart of the Church in the world we must be able to find that loving contemplation, that adoring silence, which is the essential complement to the spoken word of Revelation, and the key to active participation in the holy mysteries of faith. 5. We call for a greater pluralism of Catholic rites and uses, so that all these elements of our tradition may flourish and be more widely known during the period of reflection and 'ressourcement' (going back to the sources) that lies ahead. If the liturgical movement is to prosper, it must seek to rise above differences of opinion and taste to that unity, which is the Holy Spirit's gift to the Body of Christ. Those who love the Catholic tradition in its fullness should strive to work together in charity, bearing each other's burdens in the light of the Holy Spirit, and persevering in prayer with Mary the Mother of Jesus. 6. We hope that any future liturgical reform would not be imposed on the faithful but would proceed, with the utmost caution and sensitivity to the sensus fidelium, from a thorough understanding of the organic nature of the liturgical traditions of the Church. Our work should be sustained by prayer, education and study. This cannot be undertaken in haste, or in anything other than a serene spirit. No matter what difficulties lie ahead, the glory of the Paschal Mystery-- Christ's love, his cosmic sacrifice and his childlike trust in the Father--shines through every Catholic liturgy for those who have eyes to see, and in this undeserved grace we await the return of spring.

On Tradition

Captivated by these questions forming in my conscience, I kept reading Mystici Corporis and came across the following section: But we must not think that He rules only in a hidden or extraordinary manner. On the contrary, our Redeemer also governs His Mystical Body in a visible and normal way through His Vicar on earth. . . . Since He was all-wise He could not leave the body of the Church He had founded as a human society without a visible head. . . . That Christ and His Vicar constitute one only Head is the solemn teaching of Our predecessor of immortal memory Boniface VIII in the Apostolic Letter Unam Sanctam; and his successors have never ceased to repeat the same (par. 40). Of course, I said to myself; the Roman Pontiff and Jesus Christ form but one head of the Catholic Church. The word “tradition,” which I recalled from so many homilies in SSPX chapels, comes from the Latin verb tradere, which means “to hand down.” Ultimately, I reasoned, there must be a source from which Tradition was first passed down, and that source is Jesus Christ. In the end I realized that Tradition is a Person — the Second Person of the Holy Trinity who incarnated Himself in the womb of an immaculately conceived Virgin. As Christ and His vicar constitute but one Head of the Church, then the voice of Tradition must speak through St. Peter and his lawful successors in the Roman Primacy. Therefore, I had to make a choice to follow Catholic Tradition and embrace the Rock upon whom Christ founded His Mystical Body here and now.

Progressief - Conservatief: verkeerde alternatieven.

Lumen Gentium 8

The meaning of "subsist," subsistit, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger TCRNews2.com, Catholic Reflections & Reports Remarking on deficient notions regarding the Church and her own pleroma of unity, Cardinal Ratzinger, in a book condemning liberation theologian Leonardo Boff, puts it this way: ". . . In order to justify [his position], L. Boff appeals to the constitution Lumen Gentium n. 8 of the Second Vatican Council. From the council's famous statement, 'Haec ecclesia (sc. unica Christi ecclesia) Catholica subsistit in ecclesia Catholica' (This Church — namely the sole Church of Christ — subsists in the Catholic Church), he derives a thesis which is exactly contrary to the authentic meaning of the council text, for he affirms: 'In fact it (sc. the sole Church of Christ) may also be present in other Christian churches' (p. 75). But the council had chosen the word subsistit — subsists — exactly in order to make it clear that the one sole 'subsistence' of the true Church exists, whereas outside her visible structure only 'elementae ecclesia' — elements of the Church exist: these being elements of the same Church tend and conduct toward the Catholic Church (Lumen Gentium, n. 8). The Decree on Ecumenism expressed the same doctrine (Unitatis Redintegratio nn. 3, 4) and it was restated in Mysterium Ecclesiae ."13 Cardinal Ratzinger, On the Unity of the Church: (U.S. Catholic Conference Documentary Service, April 4, 1985, vol. 14, n. 42, pp. 685-686).

Father Murray

Hierop reageert Father Murray (The Latin Mass, Vol. 5, No. 4; Fall 1996): I was recently sent a copy of you pamphlet. "Is the Society of Saint Pius X Schismatic? Excommunicated? Rome says no." In this publication you make use of modified quotations from my interview in the Fall issue of The Latin Mass. You have intentionally misquoted me and even put words in my mouth. I shall illustrate this flagant dishonesty below. /.../ As far as I can see the Holy See has never stated that mere attendance at a Mass said by a priest in the Society of PlUS X constitutes a schismatic act. Therefore you'd have to ask, "Is that a reasonable conclusion that you could draw as a private interpreter of the law, and then propose to the faithful?" So therefore I think someone could act to a SSPX Mass and in good faith not consider that there be any problem regarding schism. Another factor to keep in mind is that just because something is not penalizes doesn't mean that it's good behavior. You could draw the conclusion from moral theology that Archbishop Lefebvre disobeyed the order of his superior and suffered canonical penalties as a result. He denies that the penalties apply; that's another matter. But it is certainly that the Pope did not intend him to do what he did; and therefore in order to justify continuing to have anything to do with this movement you'd have to have serious reasons which would justify associating with a movement founded upon disobedience to the Pope. In other words, something can be morally wrong and yet not be canonically penalizes because we don't have a penalty in canon law for every wrong thing you do. Now, what would be the wrong thing? For instance, going to a Pius X Mass because one considers the new Mass to be invalid. That's wrong, objectively wrong. /.../ They claim that they are doing is operating for the good of the Church outside the official structure of the Church. Archbishop Lefebvre would go all over the world and perform sacramental acts without the permission of; the local bishops. That's wrong. He should not do that. Now, he justified it because he said the Church was in crisis. He made statements that the Faith was being preached only in the SSPX; therefore people should stick with him. I know there are many people who lost there faith because they've embraced heresy preached in their local parishes, and read it in so-called Catholic books and magazins; but apostasized and that you couldnot get good doctrine anywhere else. So I think Lefebvre acted as a provocateur and a leader, overstating his case at times for the sake of solidifying his support. Are they schismatic in spirit? I think some of them are, from what I've read; and I think that as time goes on the members of the Society have to unemotionally examine the Ecclesia Dei provisions which led to the founding of the Fraternity of St. Peter. /.../ You know, the Fraternity of St. Peter has not been disbanded and has not been compelled to celebrate the new Mass. They've never been compelled to teach Modernism. Neither is there truth to any of the other charges that the SSPX made in 1988. I think the Society is in a defenive mode right now; and as we know, the farther you get away from the center, the more particularistic you can become. And also, ignorance is usually and ally of error and schism; and one way you maintain ignorance is by misrepresenting the true state of the Church and the true state of papal teaching. /.../ Almost always they should not. If they have the opportunity to go to an indult Mass, a Tridentine Mass, they should go to that even if it involves some difficulty. The reason is that you have to have an extraordinary or very serious circumstance to attend a Mass that's unapproved by the local bishop and by the Roman Pontiff. If they can't go to an indult Mass and don't want to tolerate going to the new Mass, they have to seriously examine the reasons for that. If it's such an absolute burden on them that it's impossible for them to be at peace going to a vaiid Novus Ordo Mass, they have to weigh that against the danger they're exposing themselves to in hearing sermons that likely may be schismatic in spirit. or even perhaps themselves being drawn, with their children, away from unity with the Roman Pontiff. The Latin Mass, Vol. 5, No. 3; Summer 1996 [June]). In my thesis, I denied the existence of a real necessity to consecrate bishops, given the papal offer (accepted at first by Archbishop Lefebvre) to have one of the members of his society elevated to the episcopate. I did, though, think that he could make a legitimate claim that Canon 1324 exempted him from a latae sententiae penalty of excommunication on the grounds that an erroneous estimation of a state of necessity allowed him to act against the law. Now I no longer think that an appeal to Canon 1324 in this case fall within the intended scope of the law. Another important criticism I recieved concerns the question of the possible invalidity of the declaration of excommunication issued by the Congregation for Bishops. A couple of well-versed canonists pointed out something crucial which I neglected to include in my thesis, and which probably led to an incorrect inference on the part of many readers: once the competent authority in the Church, in this case the Congregation for Bishops, has publicly declared a latae sententiae (automatic) penalty to have been incurred, the persons named in that delaration are bound to submit to the public effects of the penalty. They are not free to simply ignore the penalty, alleging reasons why it does not incurred automatically. They may be convinced that the declaration was invalid. They may even be able to prove their case. But they cannot simply assert this, and then act as though there had been no declaration of excommunication. They must prove their case in an administrative recourse. If they choose not to lodge a recourse, then the matter rests as established by the competent Church authority. They are excommunicated. /.../ The four bishops consecrated by Archbishop Lefebvre are and must be considered as excommunicated until such time as Church authority withdraw the declaration of excommunication. The Society of St. Pius X and those who frequent their chapels must realize that continuing on a path of defiance and separation from the Holy See, and from: the Church in general, will inevitably lead then further and further away from Catholic unity and into undeniable schism. Furthermore, history ominously teaches us how easily schism leads into heresy.

Memoriale Domini
